World Economic Forum launched a much anticipated Road safety 2.0 program in India, in association with the Indian government, Niti Aayog and MORTH. Road Safety 2.0 is a flagship project of the World Economic Forum Global Road Safety Initiative (GRSI) in partnership with FIA & WIAA under the banner of the Road Safety Partnership in India (RSPI). According to a 2018 Global Road Safety Report, India ranks 1st among 199 countries in terms of the number of road fatalities, with 11% of road fatalities worldwide taking place in India alone. Over the past decade, more than a million people have lost their lives in traffic accidents. The majority of them were young and came from modest economic backgrounds. This not only led to unimaginable suffering for their families, but also dented India’s GDP by over 3%.

Road Safety 2.0, aims to introduce technology into all 4Es of road safety, i.e. education, engineering, enforcement and emergency care, each of which has been severely ignored during decades.

More than 70 participants bringing together all those involved in road safety expressed wholeheartedly their support for the project. Stakeholders included the UN Special Envoy, World Bank and Government of India World Bank, FIA, Indian government ministries, industry executives, corporations, National Highways Authority of India, Transport Commissioners of India. state, Western India Automobile Association (WIAA), road operators, vehicle manufacturers, Society of Indian Automobiles (SIAM), tech start-ups such as HumSafer Driver Safety Foundation, insurance companies, hospital chains, All India Motor Congress, among other road safety experts.

According to Akhilesh Srivastava, the World Economic Forum, road safety 2.0 project leader, “In India almost 75% of road accidents are due to human errors such as overspeeding, fatigue, stress and poor driving skills etc., the majority of which can be easily controlled through use. of technology.. “

Technology has the power to compensate for human limitations and the leverage effect of IR 4.0 technologies in road safety can dramatically improve the situation. Citing his experience of implementing similar technology-driven programs in India, such as FASTag (the Electronic Toll Collection Program) which he led as Chief Managing Director of NHAI, Akhilesh is very confident and said that India is one of the fastest countries to adopt IR 4.0 technologies. “Large number of smartphone users, super low cost network connectivity and the pro-tech approach of Indians make it even simpler. This is evident from the success of Aadhar, UPI, FASTag and other e-governance programs. Digital technologies are making rapid inroads in agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure development, urban development and manufacturing as well, so why not in road safety! “

According to Sumedh Mane, co-founder of HumSafer Foundation for Driver Safety, “HumSafer uses artificial intelligence-based technology to check drivers for drowsiness, fatigue and alerts them in real time, preventing many accidents. In addition to alerts, the app constantly monitors driving behavior such as speeding, hard braking, overtime, etc. and score points according to them. These points can be used to incentivize or reward drivers for their good driving behavior. The reward will have a more positive impact than penalizing them. These good driving score points can be used by insurance companies to give them discounts on insurance premiums to further incentivize them. This will create a win-win ecosystem for insurance companies and vehicle owners / drivers alike. “

During the kick-off meeting, other technology pilots were also discussed, such as the use of IOT sensors, ANPR and radars integrated with interactive digital platforms on PPP models to facilitate application through e-challans, sensors and GIS-based applications to advance blackhead alerts and connection to the nearest trauma centers in the event of an accident to provide emergency care during the golden hour, etc. interactive training videos, etc.

The World Economic Forum and the FIA ​​with the Indian government have set the target of a 50% reduction in the number of road fatalities by 2025.
