It’s called RiverWest Development and is located on Grand Avenue across from the Spirit Mountain Chalet.
Developer Brad Johnson said the 27-acre site offers access to ski slopes, the St. Louis River and nine recreational trails.
“We are fortunate that our site has a tremendous amount of equipment that is both donated by God and created by MNR or the city,” Johnson said.
Johnson said they plan to build apartments, townhouses and single-family homes that can house 300 to 500 people. Steven Robertson, principal planner for the town of Duluth, expressed his support for the project.
“It’s just great to have accommodations close to our slopes, our ski slopes and our river. It’s a great location, ”said Robertson.
The site also aims to offer restaurants, shops, a hotel and a personal care center. Already, Ski Hut has announced its intention to open a store on the site to reach customers in recreation.
“The retailers there will tend to be local tenants rather than national,” Johnson said. “We are reaching out to them as we speak.”
Construction of the road began this week. They hope it will be done by the fall. However, the whole project will take several years.
The site was once home to the Riverside Golf Club.
