The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) provides weekly updates on road construction projects in the following counties in Northwestern Wisconsin: Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Buffalo, Burnett, Chippewa, Clark, Douglas, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Rusk, Sainte-Croix, Sawyer, Taylor, Trempealeau and Washburn counties.

Highway: US 2/53 (East 2sd Street)

Site: Between 29e East Avenue and 53e Avenue East, City of Superior

Calendar: April 5 to October

The description: Repair of specific locations of the concrete pavement, resurfacing East 2sd Street by grinding the concrete surface and covering it with asphalt, replacing the traffic lights at 39e East Avenue, the rehabilitation of structures on the Nemadji River and Bluff Creek, the modernization and installation of curb ramps at pedestrian crossings and the spot repair of sidewalk signs.

  • Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • The speed limit in the construction zone has been reduced to 25 mph.

Pierce and Sainte-Croix counties

Site: Between CC County southwest of Spring Valley and WIS 128 in St. Croix County

Calendar: April 5 to July

The description: Milling the existing asphalt, repairing the base of the road and covering it with new asphalt; repair and cover the Eau Galle River Bridge; repair of four box culverts in St. Croix County; the replacement of a culvert in Pierce County; and the replacement of a retaining wall in Spring Valley.

  • WIS 29 is reduced to one traffic lane during daylight hours on construction sites throughout the project boundaries, with traffic controlled by signaling operations.
  • The WIS 29 on the Eau Galle River Bridge is reduced to one lane at all times, with traffic controlled by temporary traffic lights.
  • The WIS 29 between County CC and the WIS 128 will be hijacked from May 3 for approximately 24 days.
    • Detour route: County CC, County G, WIS 72 and WIS 128.

Counties of St. Croix and Dunn

Site: Between WIS 128 in Glenwood City and County D in Sherman Town in Dunn County

Calendar: April 12 to October

The description: Milling of the existing roadway on WIS 170 from WIS 128 to WIS 79 and covering with asphalt; recycle the existing roadway from WIS 79 to County D and cover it with asphalt; rebuild the intersection of WIS 170 and WIS 79 at Boyceville; the rehabilitation of the WIS 170 bridge over Tiffany Creek northwest of Downing; replace or extend culvert pipes or equip them with end walls; the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of WIS 170 and WIS 79 northbound; increase the width of paved shoulders along WIS 170 to a minimum of 3 feet; and replacement of the guardrail.

  • Motorists can expect sporadic single lane closures monitored by flaggers.
  • Temporary arrangements for pedestrians will be put in place during the work on the sidewalk ramp.
  • Traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic lights for work on the bridge.

Site: Between Swenson Lane southeast of Arcadia and WIS 35/54 in Centerville

Calendar: April 12 to August.

The description: Milling and covering of existing roadway between Swenson Lane and WIS 35/54, milling of existing roadway 100 feet east, west and south of intersection WIS 93/35/54, installation of strips rough on the central axis, repair of culverts and cleaning of ditches as needed and replacement of damaged or obsolete guardrails.

Traffic impacts: Traffic is limited to one lane and controlled by signage while crews work to replace culvert pipes.

Site: Between the Mackey and Ross roads in the town of Trego

Calendar: March 17, 2021 – November 2022

The description: Rebuild US 53 from Mackey Road to existing US 63, relocate US 63 to closely follow the existing Wild River State Trail, and build a new drop-off interchange connecting US 53 to the realigned US 63, a new west frontage road from Mackey Road to County E and turn lanes along US 53 at existing intersections, including Mackey, O’Brien and Ross roads.

Traffic impacts: There will be occasional lane closures on US 53 and US 63 for the installation of temporary signals at intersections US 53 to US 63 and County E.
