Road safety improvements in four cities will be explored with the help of $3.8 million in grants approved by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority Board of Directors on March 14.

Studies funded under the Local Concept Development Program for fiscal year 2023 include:

  • Investigate corridor improvements in Manalapanalong County Route 3 from Devon Drive to Kensington Drive;
  • Study the replacement or rehabilitation of the Lenape Island Road Bridge on Indian Lake in Denville Township;
  • Address congestion alleviation in Lakewood along Kennedy Boulevard and County Line Road, and
  • Address security improvements throughout Easton Avenue in Franklin Township.

Projects are expected to start in September.

“Easton Avenue has the highest number of vehicular accidents among roads in Somerset County,” said Somerset County Commissioner Sara Sooy, who represents Somerset County on the NJTPA Board of Directors, in response to Easton Avenue project approval. “This study is an important first step in improving road safety in the region for our residents and visitors.

This project includes Easton Avenue from Worlds Fair Drive to the New Brunswick/Middlesex County border. There were 270 accidents on this stretch of road alone from 2014 to 2016, according to the Township of Franklin. The road is home to a mix of businesses and homes, and the study will examine where motorists can make high-speed turns, high traffic volume areas and narrow segments of the road to develop recommendations for potential security improvements.

The development of the local concept is the first phase of the Program for the realization of local capital projectsa competitive program that provides funding to the 15 NJTPA member cities and counties to prepare proposed transportation projects for eventual construction with federal funding.
