AI to improve India’s multi-pronged road safety strategy
Gadkari said road safety is the top priority of the Indian government, which is striving to reduce road accidents by 50% by 2024. “Over the past few years, we have been working on a multi-pronged strategy – constructing better roads through several divided highways and fixing problems with the existing road infrastructure to promote safety. Efforts are also underway to train drivers and raise public awareness of road safety. We are implementing state of the art technology, electronic monitoring systems for safe and efficient traffic movement on Indian highways. We have undertaken several initiatives in partnership with various agencies within government, NGOs, industry and civil society. We understand that the solution requires a very collaborative approach from the grassroots for this effort to succeed. »
Commenting on new technologies, the Minister said that there are many opportunities for the application of AI-based technologies in the transport sector, which eliminates human interference and the possibility of errors, thus improving efficiency. and traffic safety. “My vision is to use AI for law enforcement purposes and specifically where the state machinery of government is failing for various reasons. He added, “AI can be used to combine data from all applicable sources mentioned above and data used to make appropriate changes at the policy level. The private sector can expand cooperation and provide technology assistance to engineering students, third-party agencies to study and submit accident analysis report using AI-based technologies.
Piloting ADAS technology for Nagpur city buses
The Minister mentioned that MoRTH has constituted a National Road Safety Council (NRSC) as an independent body to carry out road safety activities in consultation with all stakeholders. Furthermore, he said companies and industry partners should come forward to work together for a better future. Gadkari said about 4,000 NGOs across India are already working on various aspects of road safety; they need to be made aware of AI-based tools to improve their efficiency at large.
Gadkari said, “I had the opportunity to start an AI-powered project called iRASTE (Smart Solutions for Road Safety through Technology and Engineering) in Nagpur. It is a unique industry-university partnership initiated by Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Intel, INAI, IIIT-Hyderabad, Mahinra & Mahindra, CSIR-CRRI (Central Road Research Institute). The project brings together India’s top experts in the field of AI and road safety. It applies a safe system approach in aspects of vehicle safety, mobility analysis and infrastructure safety. »
Under the project, city buses in Nagpur will be equipped with an AI-powered Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which will provide an alert to the driver two seconds before a collision occurs. In the event of a collision, the technology will be used to identify and map potential accident blackspots across the city’s road network to implement early preventative safety measures. Monitoring is carried out continuously on the roads of the city to gather information on the road surface, assets and other infrastructure conditions which will be used for timely improvement works to ensure the safety of road users.
“I am sure that the project will be the world leader in the use of AI for road safety purposes. I am also confident that after the success of the project in Nagpur, we will want to expand these projects across the world. India and Intel will have to play a major role in this Automated road inspection for traffic quality and usage monitoring AI technology on a traditional scale is very much needed I am also doing the promotion of PPP mode and I invite all stakeholders, including Intel, to work on it,” concluded Gadkari.
