LOS ANGELES, August 31, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Teens Everywhere California are urged to help educate drivers, pedestrians and cyclists about the risks on the road, which led to a nearly 5 percent nationwide increase in pedestrian fatalities last year, including 1,026 fatalities in California alone. Nearly 850 cyclists have been killed on American roads and 4,900 have been injured in collisions with motor vehicles.

Pedestrian deaths account for more than 17 percent of all traffic-related deaths in the United States, with about 70 percent occurring after dark. California accounts for more than 15 percent of the national death toll among 6,721 pedestrians.

In response to this ongoing tragedy, caused in large part by the distraction of road users, the National Road Safety Foundation and the Los Angeles Auto Show ® (Los Angeles Auto Show ®) are once again organizing the Drive Safe California PSA contest. They accept the ideas of California teens for a PSA on the importance of pedestrian and bicycle safety, which is the responsibility of motorists as well as pedestrians and cyclists who share the roads. The winner will receive a $ 2,000 cash prizes and the opportunity to work with an Emmy-winning TV producer to turn the winning idea into a 30-second TV PSA that will air on over 160 TV channels across the country. The second receives a $ 1,000 price. The teachers or school counselors of the winner and the runner-up will each receive a $ 100 gift card.

Adolescents aged 13 to 19 attending school in California are invited to enter the contest by submitting a script or treatment for a 30-second television commercial that warns drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to be careful when sharing the road. Entries must be received by mail or email by October 18, 2021. All contest entrants will receive a free ticket to attend the Los Angeles Auto Show, courtesy of the show management and subject to any Covid restrictions that may be in effect at that time.

“Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists have a responsibility to always be aware of their surroundings and not to be distracted when traveling,” said Michelle anderson from the National Road Safety Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes safe driving behavior. “Cell phones and headphones have contributed to the increase in the number of injured pedestrians and cyclists, so it is important that all road and secondary road users are not distracted. This is the message we want California teens to help us communicate through the Drive Safe California PSA contest. “
