The Gauteng provincial government has identified 18 high-capacity roads, or arteries, that could act as leverage to support the province’s plans around the development of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

MEC Transports Jacob Mamabolo, when tabling the province’s budget on June 18, said road infrastructure is at the heart of SEZs.

To this end, the Gauteng Department of Transportation has introduced the House of Transportation Infrastructure as a virtual internal capacity to ensure effective and efficient delivery of road infrastructure.

“We use drones to monitor the construction. We will officially unveil this program and demonstrate its results in July, ”said Mamabolo.

He added that the Gauteng Transportation Department was working with 12 private real estate developers to support their multibillion rand plans to propel the economy.

The provincial government will begin, in two weeks, with tours and roadshows of the 18 thoroughfares to share information on future plans.

Mamabolo said the government will deploy the unique integrated automated smart project models that seek to transform and turn around the project management environment.

“We seek to get our service providers and stakeholders and officials to come forward in one fell swoop, sing and read the same hymnbook on the discipline of project management. We seek to have a single source of truth about project management.

“This will help us improve the project’s supply environment and, just like in automotive manufacturing, ensure that we are building an appropriate linear pipeline. The Transport Infrastructure House remains seized of this matter, ”said Mamabolo.

The department is also building roads to support the Aerotropolis program of the Airports Company South Africa.

Meanwhile, the provincial government had conducted a detailed and comprehensive household transportation survey, which indicates that the cost of travel in Gauteng is hitting the working class hard and the victims of the land use planning legacy hard. apartheid in particular.

This is undoubtedly compounded by the cost imposed on Gauteng households by the electronic toll system, Mamabolo noted, calling for the complete abolition of the electronic toll system.

Mamabolo also mentioned that the ministry will soon finalize the procurement process for the appointment of a contractor to work on the William Nicol road and improve smart mobility along the Diepsloot and Steyn City area. The contractor will be on site in mid-July.

The department further plans to deliver the Vereeniging taxi rank and hand it over to the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) for its implementation, as well as conclude road works worth R 173 million in Emfuleni, comprising 21 rehabilitated and improved roads.

In addition, in the provincial government’s Growing Gauteng Together Through Smart Mobility: 2030 roadmap, five main pillars are highlighted as areas of focus, including building strong institutions, transportation as a catalyst for growth economy, data-centric mobility and Gauteng as a freight and logistics hub. .

These remain at the center of the department’s concerns for the new financial year.

As part of its mobility strategy, Gauteng has appointed a board of directors for the Gauteng Transport Authority to lead integrated transport planning in cooperation with municipalities.

A first “strategic session” to discuss the way forward in this endeavor will be organized in September.

Mamabolo confirmed that the GMA remains well managed and stable, with best practices in governance, leadership and ethical management. The agency will soon start expanding Gautrain into the townships, to drive its emissions mitigation strategy and get more people to park their cars and take the Gautrain.

He also confirmed that the repositioning of the transportation department within the provincial government is progressing with its internal capacity building exercise Build Tomorrow Today, to boost smart mobility and grow Gauteng’s economy.

The provincial transportation department is committed to improving the driver’s license examination centers, including appointing a team of forensic investigators to identify corrupt practices with the online reservation system.

In the medium term, the department is expanding the deployment of its intelligent queue management solution in all test centers to monitor the real live performance of personnel at any given time, as well as of equipment and machines.

In the longer term, the department will work with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research to design solutions to leverage smart technologies to tackle corrupt behavior.

In addition, the transport department is building an intelligent mobility data center, which will provide an electronic ticketing system for commuters integrating all modes of public transport.

The ministry has committed to finalizing a business case by the end of July for submission to the provincial treasury.

The Gauteng transport team remains committed to commercializing the taxi industry, in order to eradicate violence in taxis, as well as to help them fight the spread of Covid-19.
