LOUISVILLE, Georgia (WJBF) – Soon a long stretch of US Highway 1 in Jefferson County will be wider. State and transportation officials announced Monday that construction work in the county will be completed nine years ahead of schedule.

“These are opportunities for tomorrow, for next year and for the next decade. And I’m very optimistic, ”Governor Brian Kemp said after a panel discussion with key leaders and residents of Jefferson County.

Right now, federal COVID-19 relief funds are spurring road construction progress in Jefferson County.

Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry said, “At a total cost of around $ 150, a few million dollars, so a huge investment. Again, with the governor’s leadership and the focus on rural Georgia, economic development, these projects certainly make sense as they not only advance transportation, but Jefferson County as well.

The expansion project spans over 20 miles and includes four separate projects. Two north and two south of Louisville.

“With the federal dollars we receive flowing, when other states have to use it to make up for lost revenue and other things, we are able to effect a generational change and accelerate our plans for the future. years because of the tax form in which our state finds itself, ”Kemp said.

Currently, the new Louisville bypass is under construction. The lanes go from two to four.

Kemp added, “Every county, no matter where you are in Georgia, is affected by the port and this project really ties all of those things together so that we can continue to grow in the right way in our state.”

We hope to complete the construction of the Louisville bypass in the fall of 2022.

Below is a closer look at all projects by GDOT.

  • US 1 / State Route 4 two to four lanes north of Louisville from Mennonite Church Road to State Route 540 (Fall Line Freeway). The Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) supported the project by contributing $ 2 million to funds for the Transportation Investment Act (TIA), passed in the 2020 referendum.
  • The investments are accelerating the project from a construction start date scheduled for late 2024 until May 21.
  • The estimated construction cost is $ 32 million for a total investment of $ 42 million.
  • Kings Mill Commerce Park, a Georgia Ready for Accelerated Development (GRAD) certified site is located less than a mile from the project corridor. According to the Development Authority of Jefferson County, this GRAD site is fully equipped to accommodate various modes of utilities and transportation connectivity.
  • US 1 two-lane to four-lane south of Louisville six miles north of Nimrod Road to the Wadley Bypass. The CSRA supported this project by contributing $ 3 million in TIA funds, adopted by the 2020 referendum.
  • The estimated construction cost is $ 38 million for a total investment of $ 44 million.
  • The investments are speeding up the project from a proposed construction start date of late 2026 through May 21.

TIA 1 projects:

  • Louisville bypass widening (TIA fund of $ 5,000,000) – Under construction; planned completion fall 2022

TIA 2 projects:

  • 5.9 mile widening and reconstruction of US 1 from Clarks Mill Road to Mennonite Church Road ($ 2,000,000 from TIA funds). This project will be rewarded in about a week.
  • The major CRRSAAs mentioned above with TIA funds are also moving into construction in 2021.
