Construction could begin this month on 18 miles of roads throughout Mecklenburg County, including busy sections of Brookshire Boulevard and NC 73, as part of a road improvement project for $6.1 million.

The state Department of Transportation announced the new contract on Thursday, making improvements to roads in Mecklenburg County, including milling, resurfacing and shoulder reconstruction.

These roads include portions of NC 16 (Brookshire Boulevard) between Fred D. Alexander Boulevard and Lawton Road, and NC 73 between W. Catawba Avenue and Interstate 77.

Other sections of Mecklenburg roads will also see improvements including Runnymede Lane/Woodlawn Road between Sharon Road and Park Road, Westinghouse Boulevard between NC 49 (S. Tryon Street and Granite Street) and Caldwell Road between Back Creek Church Road and the Cabarrus county. Line.

Construction work could begin as early as April 26 and is expected to be completed by November 2023.

The construction announcement did not immediately specify which lanes or road closures might be involved in the road improvement projects.

Some roads, like the heavily trafficked NC Routes 16 and 73, only allow lane closures overnight from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., said North Carolina Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jennifer Thompson, at the Observer.

And work is not permitted on holidays, including Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day and others, she added.
