Tactical Urban Planning (TU) trials are temporary, relatively inexpensive interventions that test urban design, transportation planning, and infrastructure changes to improve road safety for all road users. The Delhi government has partnered with the SaveLIFE Foundation and the Delhi Traffic Police for this initiative.

Following the evaluation of the tests and analyzes, it aims to propose recommendations to the competent authorities for permanent improvements.

As part of the Zero Fatality Corridor (ZFC) project with the Ministry of Transport of the Delhi NCT Government, the SaveLIFE Foundation will test temporary urban design interventions to improve the safety of road users, starting this week.

The trials will see road space redistributed to ensure modal equity, altered road geometry, channelized traffic, reduced vehicle speeds, and pedestrian and cyclist safety infrastructure added.

Kailash Gahlot, Minister of Transport, said: “The Delhi government is committed to making Delhi’s roads safer for all road users. Through these trials, earlier in Bhalswa Chowk and now in Rajghat, we aim to develop a comprehensive network of safe roads and junctions across the city. Such interventions can lead to the necessary behavior change of commuters and the general public, to enable safe driving practices in cities. “

Ashish Kundra, Delhi Transport Commissioner, said: “The aim of these trials is to insert safety features for all road users. Since 2016, Rajghat Intersection and Rajghat Bus Depot have collectively witnessed 47 crashes, 13 deaths and 51 injuries. These trials aim to make the intersection inclusive, inexpensive and timely safe for all. “

Piyush Tewari, CEO of the SaveLIFE Foundation, said: “Our zero death corridor model uses evidence extensively to determine the best solution to save lives. In Rajghat, we followed a 6-point intervention strategy to redesign the crossroads. All of the elements focus on either reducing speed or minimizing conflict. Thanks to these interventions, we have succeeded in reducing the exposure distance of pedestrians by approximately 50% and the exposure time of pedestrians by 30% “
