Baked German pancakes are soft, eggy, and custard-like in the center. The batter comes together in just a few minutes and puffs up in the oven before deflating!

What Are German Pancakes?

Also called Dutch pancakes or Dutch baby pancakes, German pancakes are a cross between a baked pancake and a crepe.

They are made with a simple batter featuring flour, eggs, sugar, and milk (I also add vanilla extract and salt for flavor!). Butter is melted in a casserole dish or cast iron skillet while the oven preheats, then the batter is poured on top.

As the pancake bakes, it puffs up like a massive popover and then deflates as soon as you take it out of the oven. The results are slightly crispy edges and a thick, custardy center.

And before you ask, yes, German pancakes are thought to have been invented in Germany!

Monkey bread is a pull-apart bread that’s coated in a gooey caramel sauce. Instead of using canned biscuits, I made the monkey bread dough completely from scratch! 

Monkey bread is gloriously sticky, ooey gooey, and meant to be eaten with your hands.

Many recipes use canned biscuits as a shortcut when making pull-apart monkey bread, but I prefer making the dough completely from scratch. It’s a simple yet flavorful enriched dough that’s made with butter, whole milk, an egg, and a little sugar. 

The dough is rolled into small balls and coated with cinnamon sugar before being piled into a bundt pan, coated in caramel sauce, and baked.

Making monkey bread from scratch requires a little extra prep work, but this is an easy recipe to follow. You can even prep it ahead of time for a delicious breakfast in the morning!

Classic buttermilk biscuits have long been a favorite of mine. And while I love mile-high, freshly baked biscuits, I don’t always have time to pat out the dough and cut each individual biscuit with a biscuit cutter. 

When I’m short on time, I prefer making buttermilk drop biscuits instead.

If you’ve never made drop biscuits before, the name says it all. The biscuit dough is mixed together, then scooped straight from the bowl and onto a baking sheet. Simple as that! 

Drop biscuits may not be as uniform in appearance as classic biscuits, but they’re just as delicious alongside a bowl of soup or stew, or as the base for biscuits and gravy!
